On February 24 of 1991, the 24th Infantry Division crossed the border into Iraq, taking 3rd Platoon (and me) with it. Here are tank traks crossing the desert. You can see something burning on the horizon -- I'm not sure what it was.

These two pictures are from somewhere near Battle Position 102, a non-place on the map just south of Highway 8 between Baghdad and Basrah, Iraq. 4-64 Armor attacked the Republican Guard 26th Commando Brigade near there and basically wiped them out. I remember shooting and moving for hours and hours -- I also remember being scared out of my mind.

Directions on Highway 8 -- to the left, Basrah, to the right, Baghdad. Needless to say now, we turned left -- a decision that will forever remain controversial, especially considering the half-million Iraqi children who've died as a result of the sanctions since the war. Makes you wonder why we bothered killing all those folks back in '91.
